GSM Cell Phone Signals Excite the BrainThursday, June 29, 2006 Cell phones which use the Global System for Mobile Communications (or GSM radio phones for short) produce electromagnetic fields. The effect of GSM cell phone emissions on health is poorly understood and an area of continuing research. A recent study by Italian researchers published in the Annals of Neurology scientific journal concluded from their study that GSM Cell phone emissions affect the brain cortex nearest to the phone causing cellular excitement. However it is still unknown whether these effects are harmful, there is even a possibility that such stimulation on the brain could be beneficial for people with certain brain diseases. The study did not concentrate on the effects of GSM cell phone radiation but simply attempted to prove that the GSM radio signals do affect the brain in some way which will encourage further research into the possible effects on health. The study had 15 young male volunteers use a GSM 900 cell phone for 45 minutes and monitored the brain activity. They found that the brain cells adjacent to the cell phone became “excited” during phone use and returned to normal levels within an hour.
