Cell Phone Prison ProblemWednesday, May 03, 2006 In Texas the smuggling of Cell Phones into prisons is becoming a serious problem with the demand for cell phones being so high they out price drugs. Prison officers are concerned that they are being used to plot escapes or other criminal activity within the prison. The Cell phone prison problem is driven by the fact that a cell phone connects an inmate to the outside world which can potentially open more doors for illegal activity. Inmates with a cell phone can actually charge other inmates for talk time. Prisoners are expected to pay up to $600 to get a cell phone into the prison. Its is often correction officers who are involved in the scheme importing the cell phones into the prisons on behalf of the inmates. One answer would be to install cell phone jammers in the prisons but these may affect neighboring areas.
